Hit by an Uber or Lyft driver
Whether the app's insurance covers you depends on what the driver was doing at that moment. Here's how we find out.

Signs it was a rideshare car
- Uber or Lyft sticker in the windshield
- A phone mounted with a map or the driver app open
- Passengers in the back seat
- The driver mentions they were "driving"
Proving the app status
The driver's status (off, waiting, on a trip) decides the coverage. The rideshare company keeps that data. We request it, along with the driver's insurance information, as early as possible.
At the scene: Ask the driver directly whether they were driving for Uber or Lyft, and write down the answer. Photograph the windshield stickers and the inside of the car if you can do so safely.
Pedestrians and cyclists
If you were walking or riding a bike, your own auto policy's uninsured/underinsured coverage may still protect you, even though you weren't in a car.
